Clark Gilbert

From the Enhancing Excellence College Summit

Summary of Presentation

Brother Gilbert is from Arizona, and went on a mission to Japan. He started out by going to BYU and while there, he thought that he would like to teach there. He talked a lot about spiritual learning, especially depending on the Lord. He thought he would teach political science, but relying on the Lord, he chose another major, that of International Relations. He then went on an internship to Japan at a medical device company, and there realized that he absolutely loved business. It took him twenty years to figure out what he was supposed to do. He went to Harvard, and after a lot of prayers, he got through math camp, and also graduated there. Afterwards, he made a completely random decision to go into the newspaper industry, and taught entrepreneurship at Harvard. He came to BYU-Idaho after a phone call to President Clark, who had felt that Brother Gilbert was supposed to come to Idaho.

Personal Response

I thought Brother Gilbert was a good example for the average college experience. Many students have a hard time choosing a major, and often times forget to counsel with the Lord. Over the course of life, the average person goes through a number of life-changing experiences, and it is always a good idea to counsel with the Lord, that we might learn from His wisdom and His experiences.

Curtis Peterson

From the Enhancing Excellence College Summit

Summary of Presentation

Brother Peterson graduated in 2006 and works for the Church. He deals mostly in helping to coordinate building the several chapels across the globe, and works in the Meetinghouse Facilities Department. He spoke about the challenges in planning- especially in the still developing countries where land isn't made available to the Church. He also spoke about his two internships, one in Idaho, and the other in Washington D.C. He focused his talk around this question: What kind of lifestyle do you want? It is not only about the kind of job you want, you need to be able to balance work and life. He also spoke on the importance of building your network with influencial people. Through his experiences, he learned that others could identify what he would be good at better than himself. He counseled students to find a mentor, someone to help you choose a career and to connect with influential people.

Personal Response

I found Brother Peterson's remarks among the most interesting and important from the whole summit. I too have learned that having someone in your field to talk to is extremely helpful. My sister is one of the five presidents of a computer company based in San Francisco. She has helped me to create a resume that companies will actually consider.

Scott Caldwell

From the Enhancing Excellence College Summit

Summary of Presentation

Brother Caldwell's presentation was focused on acting on everything that we have learned about in the summit. We talked about how important it was to be involved in school, and making use of the career resources available at college. He remarked on how narrow most student's vision of what kind of job they would like to have. He said that if you are smart, broaden your horizon, don't be afaid to apply in other companies, you might actually be hired, you never know. Above all other things, he said the most important thing is to be prepared for your interview, many qualified students have been turned down because they were not sufficiently prepared for the interview.

Personal Response

Personally, I wasn't as interesting in Brother Caldwell's presentation as others, although it was probably the most important to hear and understand. It is definitely important to remember that although the company of your choice may not hire you, they might know someone who will.
